Education and social inequality in contemporary Brazil: a critical review of public policies
Abstract
This article offers a critical review of the main public policies aimed at reducing educational inequality in Brazil over the last two decades. Drawing on official data and on the specialised literature, it examines how programmes for access, permanence and quality of basic and higher education have affected students from different social, racial and regional backgrounds.
The analysis shows significant progress in expanding access, but also persistent gaps in learning outcomes and completion rates.
